From May 22 to June 30, 2023, UC-CON faculty members Lily Baludda, Wilbur Comafay, and Jonathan Ilagan participated in the Advanced Course in Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing in the Inpatient Setting held at the University of the Philippines – Philippine General Hospital. This intensive program, accredited for 45 CPD points, drew 56 participants from across the Philippines, equipping them with in-depth knowledge and advanced skills in mental health nursing.
Delivered through five weeks of asynchronous online modules followed by an immersive week of in-person workshops, the course offered a comprehensive curriculum tailored to inpatient mental health care. Topics included therapeutic interventions for various maladaptive behaviors, psychopharmacology, crisis intervention, inpatient ward management, community reintegration, and interprofessional collaboration. Participants gained a solid understanding of evidence-based practices essential for handling complex mental health cases in clinical settings.
During the in-person workshops, held at UP Philippine General Hospital, participants engaged in practical exercises, case studies, and simulations that reinforced their clinical assessment and intervention skills. This hands-on component provided an opportunity to practice therapeutic communication techniques, crisis management strategies, and team-based approaches in real-life scenarios, ensuring that participants could confidently apply these skills in their own practice.
The successful completion of this program underscores UC-CON’s dedication to advancing mental health nursing education and supporting professional development. By equipping faculty with specialized training in psychiatric nursing, UC-CON continues to elevate the standard of care for individuals with mental health disorders and to prepare its students for effective, compassionate practice in diverse healthcare settings.
