The University of the Cordilleras (UC) has taken strong action to foster a smoke-free campus, aligning with the City of Baguio’s Smoke-Free Ordinance to create a safer, healthier environment for students, faculty, and visitors. As part of its comprehensive smoke-free policy, UC actively discourages smoking and vaping on campus, aiming to reduce cigarette waste, air pollution, and the health risks associated with these habits. The policy covers all areas within the campus grounds, with additional measures to ensure strict compliance.
In line with its intensified anti-smoking and anti-vaping stance, UC has implemented mandatory bag checks at all entry points. Security officers examine students’ and visitors’ belongings to prevent vape gadgets, cigarettes, or other prohibited items from entering the premises. Any such items found are confiscated, and on October 20, 2023, UC held a ceremonial crushing of seized vaping devices in collaboration with the City’s Smoke-Free Taskforce. The crushed devices were then turned over to the City Health Services Office for safe disposal as hazardous waste, emphasizing UC’s dedication to health and environmental responsibility.
UC’s policy on confiscating vaping devices reinforces the university’s commitment to the city’s Smoke-Free Ordinance. Through this action, UC demonstrates its support for Baguio’s broader campaign to promote a smoke-free city, working alongside other Higher Education Institutions that have adopted similar policies. The proactive collaboration with the City’s Smoke-Free Taskforce exemplifies UC’s role in leading efforts for a tobacco-free environment.
To further support its anti-smoking policy, UC has implemented awareness programs and offers counseling resources to individuals who wish to quit. The university encourages its community to advocate for smoke-free practices and promotes a shared responsibility in upholding these guidelines. UC’s dedication to a smoke-free campus extends beyond its boundaries, contributing to a healthier, more sustainable community in alignment with Baguio City’s public health and wellness goals.
