Enhancing Student Readiness for Safe and Effective Clinical Practice
November 6, 2024 – University of the Cordilleras, Baguio City. The University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing (UC-CON) held a comprehensive, full-day training at the UC Theater from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, under the supervision of Level 4 Program Head Dr. Sheila Maria Batoon. The event aimed to strengthen nursing students’ clinical competence, focusing on medication administration and safe injection practices.
Morning Session: Medication Practices in the Clinical Area
The morning session featured a Lecture-Discussion on Medication Practice in the Clinical Area, led by UC-CON Program Chair and Quality Assurance Officer Mrs. Judith Layao and faculty member Mrs. Sherlyn Baliwa.
The discussion highlighted critical concepts such as the dos and don’ts of medication preparation, proper documentation, and the Rights of Medication Administration—emphasizing safety, precision, and accountability in clinical settings.
A special focus was given to medication computation, ensuring that nursing students develop the accuracy and confidence required in drug preparation and administration.
Afternoon Session: Safe Injection Practices and Hepatitis B Vaccination
In the afternoon, the focus shifted to Safe Injection Practices and the importance of Hepatitis B vaccination. The lecture-discussion was conducted by Ms. Michelle M. Sepulchre (Infection Prevention and Control Nurse), Mr. Greg D. de Guzman, and Mr. Cheng Lee Q. Dagman—all from the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center (BGHMC).
The session underscored proper injection techniques, infection prevention measures, and the critical role of vaccination in ensuring the safety of both patients and healthcare providers.

Attended by Level 4 UC-CON students and faculty, the event reinforced the college’s dedication to providing holistic, hands-on nursing education. Participants actively engaged in discussions, gaining valuable insights that enhanced their clinical knowledge and teaching approaches.
