Promoting Campus Safety and Disaster Preparedness
November 14, 2024 – University of the Cordilleras, Baguio City. The University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing (UC-CON) actively participated in the Fourth Quarter Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill (NSED)at 2:00 PM, joining millions across the country in promoting disaster preparedness and community resilience.
This nationwide initiative, organized by the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), aims to strengthen earthquake awareness and preparedness among Filipinos, ensuring individuals and institutions know how to respond effectively during seismic events.
Campus-wide Participation and Safety Awareness
During the drill, UC-CON students, faculty, and staff practiced the “duck, cover, and hold” technique—an essential safety procedure designed to minimize injuries during an earthquake. Participants also reviewed evacuation protocols and assembly procedures, emphasizing the importance of calm, coordinated responses in times of crisis.
The drill served as an educational and practical exercise, reminding everyone of the significance of readiness and quick decision-making during emergencies. It also reinforced UC-CON’s ongoing efforts to integrate disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) into its institutional culture.
Commitment to Resilience and Preparedness
By taking part in the NSED, UC-CON reaffirmed its commitment to promoting a safe and resilient learning environment. The college continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its students, faculty, and staff by actively supporting national initiatives that cultivate a culture of preparedness.
Through such proactive participation, UC-CON contributes to the broader goal of building disaster-resilient communities, ensuring that future nurses are not only skilled healthcare providers but also advocates for safety and public health during emergencies.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Alignment
This activity supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
SDG 13.1 – Strengthen resilience and adaptive capacity to climate-related hazards and natural disasters.
The drill reinforces disaster preparedness as a key component of climate action and community safety.
SDG 11.5 – Reduce the number of people affected and the economic losses caused by disasters.
By participating in earthquake preparedness drills, UC-CON promotes safer, more resilient communities capable of responding effectively to emergencies.
