Advancing Research Excellence and Innovation in Nursing Education
November 14, 2024 – University of the Cordilleras, Legarda Campus. The University of the Cordilleras (UC)hosted a one-day intensive training titled “Amplifying Research Capability: Qualitative Analysis,” held from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM at CL 1. The event gathered 24 participants from various UC colleges, including Mr. Gilbert Bernardinofrom the College of Nursing, and aimed to enhance participants’ competencies in qualitative research. Esteemed experts Dr. Jose Maria Pangilinan and Dr. Thelma Palaoag led the sessions, delivering impactful discussions on methodology and innovation.
Exploring the Depths of Qualitative Research
Dr. Jose Maria Pangilinan opened the training with an in-depth lecture on the fundamentals of qualitative research, emphasizing its value in understanding complex human experiences and social realities. He discussed key methodologies such as phenomenology, ethnography, and grounded theory, providing practical examples of how these approaches contribute to richer, more contextualized findings.
Dr. Pangilinan also highlighted the importance of reflexivity and contextual awareness, guiding participants in maintaining research integrity while interpreting participants’ lived experiences. His lecture reinforced how qualitative inquiry can inform evidence-based practice and policy formulation across disciplines.
Integrating Artificial Intelligence in Research Writing
In the afternoon session, Dr. Thelma Palaoag presented an engaging discussion on the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) tools in academic research writing. She demonstrated how AI applications enhance productivity by offering features such as real-time grammar and style refinement, automated citation generation, and data-driven analysis to improve writing quality.
Dr. Palaoag emphasized that incorporating AI enables researchers to focus on critical thinking, analysis, and creativity, while maintaining professional standards in academic output. She underscored AI’s potential to make research writing more efficient, accurate, and accessible.
Empowering UC Researchers
The session concluded with an open forum, where participants shared insights and challenges encountered in qualitative research. Through the expert guidance of Dr. Pangilinan and Dr. Palaoag, attendees gained a deeper understanding of qualitative methodologies and discovered new tools to enhance their scholarly work.
This initiative reflects UC’s ongoing commitment to research capability-building, fostering a culture of inquiry and innovation among its faculty and researchers.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Alignment
This activity supports the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly:
SDG 9.5 – Enhance scientific research and upgrade technological capabilities of sectors.
Integrating AI tools in research writing promotes innovation and advances the quality and efficiency of academic outputs.
SDG 4.7 – Ensure learners acquire knowledge and skills to promote sustainable development and global citizenship.
The training empowered UC faculty to strengthen their research expertise and contribute to knowledge generation and professional growth.
