“Championing the Welfare of Filipino Nurses Toward a Sustainable Nursing Workforce”
The Kafagway Nurses Association (PNA-Baguio City Chapter), in collaboration with the University of Baguio School of Nursing, successfully hosted the PNA-Baguio City Chapter Convention 2025 on January 19, 2025, at the UB FGB Hall. The convention focused on advancing the welfare of Filipino nurses and fostering a sustainable nursing workforce through insightful discussions, empowering talks, and networking opportunities.
Event Highlights
Opening Ceremonies
The event began with the Philippine National Anthem and the PNA Hymn, followed by a warm welcome from Mr. Milford Umayat, incoming President of the PNA Baguio City Chapter. Honorable Mayor Benjamin B. Magalong delivered an inspirational message, highlighting the critical role of nurses in community health and development.
Keynote Address
The keynote speech was delivered by Dr. Erlinda C. Palaganas, former PNA President and Regional Coordinator of the CRHRDC. She emphasized the importance of building a sustainable nursing workforce to address the evolving healthcare needs of the Filipino community.
Morning Plenary Sessions
Plenary 1: Empowering Filipino Nurses: Building a Strong Foundation of Physical and Mental Well-Being
Speaker: Mr. Gilbert G. Marzan
This session underscored the importance of prioritizing nurses’ health and well-being to enhance their professional capabilities.
An open forum followed the morning session, allowing attendees to share insights and raise questions about the topic discussed.

Plenary 3: Nurturing Nurses’ Health and Wellness for Enhanced Patient Experience
Speaker: Dr. Norenia T. Dao-Ayen, PNA-Baguio City Chapter
The discussion emphasized the connection between nurses’ well-being and improved patient outcomes.
Panel Discussion: Addressing the Unique Challenges of Filipino Nurses
A diverse panel of experts shared their perspectives on pressing issues affecting Filipino nurses:
- Dr. Judith Odanee G. Magwilang (President, Cordillera Association of Nursing Deans)
- Dr. Ricky B. Ducas (Mental Health Coordinator, Baguio Health Department)
- Mr. Fidel M. Bautista (OIC Chief Nurse, SLU Sacred Heart Medical Center)
- Mr. Randy S. Occidental (Nurse VI, Assistant Chief Nurse, Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center)
The panel addressed challenges such as mental health concerns, professional burnout, and workforce sustainability. Attendees gained actionable strategies, such as implementing workplace wellness programs, promoting leadership training, and advocating for policies to enhance nurse retention and career advancement.
Closing and Recognition
The convention concluded with the awarding of certificates to speakers and moderators, the induction of the new set of officers, and closing remarks from outgoing PNA-Baguio City Chapter President Ms. Maribel Dicang.
University of the Cordilleras Faculty Participation
The University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing (UC-CON) played an active role in the convention, showcasing its commitment to advancing the nursing profession.
Led by Dean Judith Odanee G. Magwilang, the UC delegation made a strong impression. Ken Fias-ilon, a newly appointed member of the PNA-Baguio City Chapter Board of Directors, represented the institution with distinction.
UC faculty members Florida Cariño and Marian Mendoza received special recognition for their dedication to participating in the event, highlighting their active involvement in promoting professional growth. Faculty members Donna Banga-an, Shekaina Badecao, and Irene Pascua also joined the UC team, contributing to the institution’s strong representation.
The presence of UC-CON faculty reaffirmed the university’s dedication to fostering excellence in nursing education and professional development.
