On February 25, 2025, Level 4 students from the University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing (UC CON), currently on Community Health Nursing (CHN) duty in Pongayan, Kapangan, conducted a pathway-clearing activity leading to Shomanay Cave. This burial cave, a cherished cultural landmark, has also served as a tourist destination, drawing visitors interested in the region’s rich heritage.

The initiative aimed to ensure that the pathway to Shomanay Cave remains clean, visible, and safe for locals and tourists. Over time, vegetation and natural debris had made the trail difficult to navigate, posing potential risks to visitors. Understanding the importance of accessibility and safety, the UC CON students took the opportunity to contribute to the community by clearing the pathway, making it more welcoming for future visitors.
Equipped with tools and guided by local community members, the students worked together to remove obstructions along the trail. Their efforts not only improved the physical accessibility of the cave but also demonstrated their commitment to community engagement and environmental stewardship. This initiative was led and supervised by Clinical Instructors, Ferdinand C. Tercero and Lily Christy Baludda.

This activity reflects the broader mission of UC CON in fostering holistic nursing education that extends beyond hospital and clinical settings. By engaging in community-based projects, students develop a deeper appreciation of the role of nurses in public health, environmental care, and cultural preservation.
Local residents and officials expressed their gratitude for the students’ initiative, acknowledging the positive impact of their efforts. The project served as a meaningful experience for the nursing students, reinforcing the value of service, teamwork, and cultural awareness in their journey toward becoming well-rounded healthcare professionals.
The UC College of Nursing continues to encourage student participation in outreach programs that not only enhance their skills but also strengthen their connection with communities, promoting a well-rounded approach to healthcare and social responsibility.
