NEPRA Guild Midyear Conference 2024 Highlights Leadership, Management, and Research Innovations in Nursing

Baguio City, Philippines — The Nursing Educators and Practitioners’ Guild (NEPRA Guild) successfully held its Midyear Conference and Workshop 2024 with the theme “Strengthening Nurses’ Leadership, Management, and Research in 3Cs, Post-Pandemic Era,” on July 19–20, 2024, at the University of the Cordilleras (UC) Theater, Governor Pack Road, Baguio City.

Organized in collaboration with the University of the Cordilleras, Saint Louis University Sacred Heart Medical Center, and other higher education institutions in Northern Luzon, the two-day event gathered nursing educators, practitioners, and researchers from across the region to advance leadership and research competencies in the evolving healthcare landscape.

Workshop Learning Outcomes and Sessions

The pre-conference workshops on Day 1 focused on building research, clinical supervision, and patient safety competencies.

  • Workshop 1, Writing Research Publication, was facilitated by Dr. Jhordin James C. Montegrico, Assistant Professor at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, USA, along with experts from the University of the Cordilleras, Benguet State University, and other partner institutions.
  • Workshop 2, Clinical Supervision Competencies, led by Dr. Norenia T. Dao-ayen of Saint Louis University, strengthened participants’ capacity for clinical supervision and case study facilitation.
  • Workshop 3, Patient Safety Competencies in Clinical Settings, headed by Mr. Fernando M. Calion, Nurse V and Patient Safety Officer of Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center, emphasized hospital safety culture and quality assurance practices.

The Workshop Learning Outcomes underscored the importance of innovation, leadership, and management in both hospital and community settings. Participants were encouraged to demonstrate leadership skills, apply management changes in their workplaces, and reflect on the integration of research in clinical and community nursing practice.

The formal conference commenced on Day 2 with an invocation and welcome remarks from Dr. Nancy M. Flores, President of the University of the Cordilleras. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Jhordin James C. Montegrico, who discussed the theme of “Strengthening Nurses’ Leadership, Management, and Research in 3Cs, Post-Pandemic Era.”

Plenary speakers included:

  • Dr. Florence C. Cawaoan, former PRC Board of Nursing member, on Strengthening Nursing Leadership in Research and Innovation;
  • Dr. Jude L. Tayaben, President of NEPRAGuild and Associate Professor at Benguet State University, on Innovations and Emerging Leadership in Nursing Education;
  • Dr. Judith Odanee G. Magwilang, Academic Dean at the University of the Cordilleras and President of the Cordillera Association of Nursing Deans, who shared insights on Leadership and Management Practices in Nursing Education;
  • Dr. Aldren R. Remon, Chief Nurse of Saint Louis University Sacred Heart Medical Center, who presented Best Practices of Leadership and Management in Nursing Practice and Policy Regulation; and
  • Mr. Norberto G. Prepose, Jr., Chief Nurse of Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center, who discussed Leadership in Nursing Service Administration.

The plenary discussions highlighted the evolving roles of nurses in post-pandemic healthcare systems and the necessity of continuous professional development to adapt to contemporary challenges in nursing education, clinical practice, and health research.

In the afternoon, Dr. Montegrico chaired the scientific program, which featured concurrent paper presentations across five tracks:
(a) Nursing Leadership and Management,
(b) Nursing Practice,
(c) Nursing Education,
(d) Nursing Care of Populations, and
(e) Nursing Workforce and Other Research.

The conference concluded with a keynote address from Dr. Edward V. Cruz, Associate Professor and Associate Dean at the University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, who emphasized the role of collaborative leadership and global research networks in advancing the nursing profession.

The NEPRAGuild Midyear Conference and Workshop 2024 reaffirmed the guild’s commitment to professional excellence in nursing leadership, management, and research. By integrating clinical, community, and academic perspectives, the event provided a platform for nursing professionals to engage in scholarly exchange, capacity-building, and evidence-based practice — vital elements in shaping the post-pandemic direction of nursing in the Philippines.
