April 21, 2025
The University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing (UC-CON) proudly launched Communidad 2025 with the first-ever Safety Olympics, held on the morning of April 21 at the UC Gymnasium. The event brought together students from Levels 2, 3, and 4, along with faculty members who supported and facilitated the event.

The program began with a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the official opening of the event. Following this, Mrs. Josephine Minger, Level 3 Coordinator and host of Communidad, delivered the opening remarks. She welcomed the participants and emphasized the significance of the event as an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful learning, collaboration, and community-based nursing practice.

An exciting intermission number by the UC-CON dancers followed, providing a lively and energetic performance that entertained and energized the audience before the main event began.

Mr. Lester June Chumacog then introduced the objectives and mechanics of the Safety Olympics, setting the stage for the competition that would challenge the participants’ nursing skills and teamwork.

The highlight of the morning was the Safety Olympics, which saw four student teams competing in various challenges to test their skills and knowledge in emergency nursing procedures. These challenges included:
- Basic Life Support (BLS)
- Bandaging Techniques
- Splinting
- Carrying a Patient Safely
- Group Crawling
- Trust Walk with Blindfolds
- Proper Use of the Spine Board

These activities were judged by an esteemed panel of safety and emergency response experts:
- Engr. Rygie Carulla – OSH Officer, UC
- Mr. Sonny M. Del Rosario – OSH Officer, UC
- Ms. Julia Pacuran, RN – Emergency Room Nurse, BGHMC
- Mr. Sahrens C. Albuera, RN – Emergency Nurse Responder, 911 On Call – Baguio

The Safety Olympics was more than just a competition—it was a celebration of community service, preparedness, and teamwork, essential qualities for nursing professionals. As Communidad 2025 continues, UC-CON remains committed to nurturing future nurses who are both clinically competent and dedicated to service and collaboration.
