La Trinidad, Benguet – September 12, 2025. In line with the observance of National CPR Day, the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Benguet Chapter, headed by volunteer Mr. Ladimer Balawag Jr., joined forces with the University of the Cordilleras (UC) College of Nursing to conduct a community outreach activity at Bineng High School.
The initiative, actively participated in by BSN 4D-A and BSN 4D-B nursing students under the guidance of Clinical Instructors Ms. Lily Christy Baludda and Mr. Christian Basatan, featured two major components:
- Assisting in CPR training and workshops for high school students, ensuring that participants gained hands-on experience in cardiopulmonary resuscitation as a lifesaving emergency response skill.
- Delivering lectures on Tuberculosis (TB) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), raising awareness on these critical public health concerns and empowering students with knowledge for prevention and early detection.
National CPR Day: A Celebration of Lifesaving Knowledge
National CPR Day is celebrated annually to underscore the importance of cardiopulmonary resuscitation in saving lives during cardiac arrest and respiratory emergencies. This nationwide observance advocates for widespread CPR education, emphasizing that every individual—not only healthcare professionals—has the potential to be a first responder in emergencies. By conducting trainings and workshops, the day promotes resilience, preparedness, and community safety.
Contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
This initiative is aligned with several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically:
- SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being – by equipping students with CPR skills and raising awareness on TB and HIV, the activity directly promotes health, prevention, and emergency preparedness.
- SDG 4: Quality Education – by integrating practical health education and skills training, the program fosters lifelong learning opportunities beyond the classroom.
- SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals – through collaboration between the UC College of Nursing, PRC Benguet Chapter, and Bineng High School, the activity exemplifies strong partnerships to achieve community and global health goals.
This celebration not only strengthened the clinical teaching competencies of UC nursing students but also reinforced their role as advocates of public health, community empowerment, and lifesaving education.
