UC-CON Leads Global Nursing Initiatives: International Conferences, Health Campaigns, and Community Partnerships in 2023

UC-CON and UYAHH Collaborate with POPCOM CAR for HIV Awareness and Women’s Health during National Women’s Month 2023

In celebration of National Women’s Month 2023, the University of the Cordilleras (UC) College of Nursing (UC-CON) Student Council (CSC) and the Youth and Adolescents Sexuality and Reproductive Health Hub (UYAHH) successfully partnered with the Population Commission (POPCOM) CAR to organize a health awareness campaign for UC employees and students. The theme of the event, “Strengthening Partnerships Towards Achieving Women’s and Gender Equality,” underscored the importance of cross-institutional collaboration in addressing health challenges and promoting gender equality.

The event began with a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing between UC-CON and POPCOM CAR, solidifying their joint commitment to tackling pressing health issues affecting women and marginalized groups. POPCOM’s Cecile A. Basawil delivered a lecture on gender equality, women’s rights, and equitable access to health services, highlighting the essential role of local partnerships in achieving broader health goals.

In the afternoon, UC-CON collaborated with the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center to provide a session on HIV transmission, prevention, and maternal-child nursing, led by Dr. Jimmy A. Bilod. The event culminated with free HIV screenings for UC employees and students, offering an opportunity for the UC community to better understand HIV and its prevention. This collaboration exemplified the university’s commitment to health advocacy, gender equality, and community empowerment.


UC-CON Partners with Senior Citizens Association for Mental Health Seminar

On July 25, 2023, the UC-CON collaborated with the Senior Citizens Association of Barangay Sta. Escolastica, Baguio City, to host a seminar focused on mental health and self-awareness for senior citizens. This partnership aimed to address the unique mental well-being needs of older adults, promoting resilience and emotional stability in this important demographic.

UC-CON faculty member Gomer Ponso, who served as the guest speaker, shared valuable insights into coping mechanisms and stress management techniques specifically tailored for seniors. The seminar encouraged senior citizens to develop healthier ways of dealing with stress and to practice mindfulness and self-awareness, helping them to maintain positive mental health.

This partnership with the Senior Citizens Association highlights UC-CON’s dedication to strengthening local community ties and supporting the well-being of marginalized groups, particularly older adults.


UC-CON Strengthens Research Capacity with DOST-CAR for Writing for Publication Seminar

From September 18-19, 2023, UC-CON faculty members participated in an intensive seminar organized by the Department of Science and Technology – Cordillera Administrative Region (DOST-CAR) and the Cordillera Regional Health Research and Development Consortium. Held at Saint Louis University, Baguio City, this seminar focused on “Writing for Publication,” providing faculty with the tools and knowledge to enhance their academic research and contribute to the growing body of nursing literature.

The seminar featured esteemed speakers such as Dr. Jimmy Catanes, Dr. Thelma Palaoag, and Dr. Erlinda Palaganas, who shared their expertise on the rigorous process of publishing research, from literature review to peer review. Their sessions aimed to equip participants with the skills to navigate the challenges of academic publication, strengthening the research culture within UC-CON and contributing to the broader academic community.

This collaboration between UC-CON and DOST-CAR reflects the university’s commitment to advancing research and scholarship in nursing education, ensuring faculty are equipped with the necessary tools to engage in meaningful academic contributions.


UC-CON Facilitates PRC Registration Event for Local and National Nursing Students and Professionals

On September 22, 2023, UC-CON hosted a PRC Application and Registration Event, assisting 230 nursing students and professionals from UC and other institutions with their Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) registration and renewal. This initiative was a partnership between UC-CON and the PRC, aiming to streamline the registration process for students preparing to enter the nursing profession and professionals seeking to maintain their credentials.

The event was a crucial step in providing accessible services to nursing students and professionals, helping them fulfill regulatory requirements and advance their careers. By collaborating with the PRC, UC-CON ensured that its students had the support they needed to meet professional standards and succeed in the competitive healthcare field.

This initiative underscores UC-CON’s role as a key partner in shaping the future of nursing, both locally and nationally, by facilitating access to professional certification and development.


UC-CON Organizes Successful Blood Donation Drive in Collaboration with Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center

On November 23, 2023, UC-CON’s Student Council organized a blood donation drive in collaboration with the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center Blood Bank. The event successfully collected 80 bags of blood, underscoring the importance of community health and the life-saving power of blood donation.

The initiative brought together UC students and community members to support the hospital’s ongoing blood supply needs. This partnership highlights UC-CON’s commitment to health advocacy and its role in mobilizing the local community to contribute to public health initiatives. The drive is an example of how the university’s student body, along with local healthcare institutions, can work together to make a lasting impact on the lives of others.


UC-CON and Career Center Partner for Successful Nursing Career Fair

On December 2, 2023, the UC Career Center and Student Affairs Office, in collaboration with UC-CON, organized a Career Fair for 346 nursing students and alumni. This event brought together students and distinguished agencies to provide valuable career development opportunities and insights into the nursing profession.

The fair featured presentations from various national and local agencies, showcasing career opportunities, internships, and professional growth programs. By connecting students with potential employers, the event served as a vital platform for networking and career development.

On April 12, 2023, a distinguished group of UC-CON faculty, led by Dean Judith Odanee G. Magwilang, attended The Future of Nursing International Scientific Conference at the Rizal Park Hotel in Manila. This esteemed event brought together global nursing professionals, educators, and researchers to discuss innovations in healthcare delivery, evidence-based practices, and the role of technology in nursing. UC-CON faculty members participated in engaging presentations and panel discussions focused on the future of nursing education and clinical practice.

The 7th Summer Conference of the International Council for Nurses – Cebu

Just a month later, on May 12, 2023, UC-CON faculty attended the 7th Summer Conference of the International Council for Nurses (ICN) in Cebu City, organized by the Philippine Nurses Association (PNA). With the theme “Our Nurses, Our Future,” the conference highlighted the critical role nurses play in shaping the future of healthcare and addressing global health challenges.

UC-CON faculty engaged in workshops and discussions focused on nursing leadership, best practices, and innovations in healthcare delivery. The event also explored how nurses can lead efforts to improve patient care and integrate new technologies in nursing practice. UC-CON’s participation in the ICN conference strengthened its global nursing network and reinforced the college’s role in preparing nursing professionals to lead in diverse healthcare settings.

4th Biennial International Conference on Nursing Education, Practice, and Research – Zamboanga City

UC-CON also played an active role in the 4th Biennial International Conference on Nursing Education, Practice, and Research, held on July 6-7, 2023, in Zamboanga City. The event, organized by the Nurse Educators and Practitioners Guild (NEPRAGuild) Inc., brought together nursing professionals and researchers to discuss the theme “Nurses Together: A Force for Global Health.” UC-CON was represented by a delegation of faculty and students, led by Dean Magwilang.

The conference focused on collaborative research initiatives and the role of nurses in contributing to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and global health advancements.
