University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing: Empowering Communities Through Health Awareness and Outreach Programs

The University of the Cordilleras College of Nursing (UC-CON) is committed to advancing public health through a variety of community outreach programs designed to promote wellness, disease prevention, and health education. The initiatives, carried out by both students and faculty, are integral to the University’s mission to contribute positively to the health and well-being of local communities in Baguio City and beyond. Here are some key programs that showcase UC-CON’s dedication to health advocacy.

Health Education in Cabinet Hill-Teacher’s Camp

From April 10-12, 2023, UC-CON Level 2 nursing students, under the supervision of Clinical Instructor Humbeline Sokkong, organized a series of health education sessions in the Barangay Hall of Cabinet Hill-Teacher’s Camp. The focus was on providing essential health information to Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiaries and young children in the community.

One of the primary sessions was dedicated to Tuberculosis (TB) Awareness, where the students educated participants about the causes, symptoms, and prevention strategies for TB. This outreach empowered local residents with the knowledge to prevent the spread of the disease and seek early treatment if necessary.

In addition to TB awareness, the students led an Oral Health Education session aimed at kindergarten children from the Cabinet Hill-Teacher’s Camp Child Development Center. The interactive session taught children the importance of dental hygiene, with live demonstrations on brushing and flossing techniques. To further support these efforts, each child received an oral hygiene kit, encouraging them to maintain good dental habits at home.

Health Workers Day Celebration

In celebration of Health Workers Day 2023, UC-CON partnered with the National Coalition of Health Workers in Baguio City and the UC College of Law to honor the contributions of health professionals. The event, held at Malcolm Square on Session Road, offered a range of free services including health assessments, family planning consultations, and information on preventing non-communicable diseases. The event also provided complimentary legal aid and notarial services, recognizing the dedication of healthcare workers in the community and offering them much-needed support.

Mental Health Awareness for Senior Citizens

On July 25, 2023, UC-CON collaborated with the Senior Citizens Association of Barangay Sta. Escolastica in Baguio City to conduct a seminar focused on Mental Health and Self-Awareness for senior citizens. Faculty member Gomer Ponso led the session, addressing the unique mental health challenges faced by older adults. The seminar covered key topics such as stress management, coping mechanisms, and fostering emotional resilience. It aimed to enhance the mental well-being of seniors, empowering them with strategies to manage stress and improve their overall quality of life.

Blood Donation Drive

In another impactful community initiative, the UC-CON Student Council organized a blood donation drive on November 23, 2023, in collaboration with the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center Blood Bank. The event collected 80 bags of blood, contributing significantly to the hospital’s blood supply. By involving UC nursing students and the wider community in this life-saving activity, the event helped raise awareness about the importance of blood donation and its potential to save lives. The drive underscored the role of UC-CON in inspiring acts of compassion and community service.

HIV Awareness Seminar in La Trinidad

On December 16, 2023, UC-CON’s Youth and Adolescent Sexuality and Reproductive Health Hub (UYAHH) hosted an informative seminar in Tawang, La Trinidad, Benguet, as part of World AIDS Day observances. Under the theme “EmpowerED: Let Communities Lead in HIV Awareness,” the seminar focused on HIV prevention, care, and reducing the stigma surrounding the disease. Local community members, health advocates, and students gathered to learn about HIV transmission, testing, and treatment. Youth advocates led the discussions and interactive activities, helping to dispel myths about HIV and encouraging open dialogue. Participants also received educational materials to further their understanding and support HIV awareness efforts within their communities.

Through these programs, UC-CON plays an active role in fostering healthier, more informed communities. Whether it’s educating residents about TB and oral health, offering mental health support for seniors, organizing life-saving blood donations, or raising awareness about HIV, UC-CON’s community outreach initiatives reflect a strong commitment to public health. By combining hands-on education with a spirit of service, UC-CON continues to empower individuals and families with the tools and knowledge they need to lead healthier lives.
