On November 14, 2024, Level 3 and 4 nursing students from the University of the Cordilleras (UC), during their community immersion activities, actively took part in “Project Shalamat”, a bloodletting initiative and health assembly held at the Pongayan Barangay Hall in Pongayan, Kapangan. This project, led by Barangay Captain Mario Soriano and Community Nurse Brelyn Atinyao, brought together healthcare providers, students, and residents to address key health concerns in the area.
The students contributed by donating blood and assisting with blood typing and other vital procedures. Guided by their Clinical Instructors, Ferdinand C. Tercero, and Buen Guisala, and supported by medical professionals from the Baguio General Hospital and Medical Center Blood Bank Services, they demonstrated competence and dedication to the healthcare field. Their participation provided them with practical experience while fulfilling a critical community need.
Alongside the bloodletting activity, the 4th Barangay Health Board Assembly convened to tackle significant health topics such as Tuberculosis, HIV, and the importance of blood donation. The nursing students actively participated in the discussions, enriching their knowledge of public health issues and fostering stronger community ties.
“Project Shalamat” reflects the shared commitment of UC, local leaders, and healthcare professionals to improving community health. The involvement of UC nursing students underscored the importance of collaboration and hands-on learning, reinforcing their role as future healthcare providers prepared to make meaningful contributions to society.
